2. Scope of This Policy

This Policy applies to information we process when you use our Services—our websites, newsletters, email dispatches, comments or forums (if enabled), account features (if enabled), submissions, customer support and any advertising we control. Maghreb Minutes maintains an online‑only presence and distributes its journalism through multiple digital channels, including the maghrebminutes.com domain, email newsletters and official social‑media accounts on platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and others. When you interact with Maghreb Minutes content on these platforms, we may collect or receive certain information; however, the underlying social‑media service acts as its own data controller. This Policy covers how we handle information in connection with our Services but does not apply to personal data collected independently by third‑party sites or services that we do not control (including Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube or any other platform). Those platforms are subject to their own privacy policies and practices, and we encourage you to review their terms and settings.

Journalistic exceptions

As a news organization, Maghreb Minutes sometimes processes personal information for journalistic, artistic or literary purposes. In Canada, such activities may be exempt from certain provisions of data‑protection laws to protect freedom of expression and the public interest. Similar exemptions exist in the EU/UK GDPR, UK’s Data Protection Act 2018, and other regimes. When we collect and store information in connection with reporting, we strive to balance privacy with our journalistic mission and legal obligations.

3. What Information We Collect

We collect information in three ways: directly from you, automatically and from third parties.

A. Information you provide

  • Contact details: You may provide your name, email address and any information you include in messages, support requests, or submissions.
  • Newsletter subscriptions: When you sign up for newsletters or alerts, we collect your email address and preferences.
  • Comments: If we enable comments, you may provide a display name, email address, website URL and comment content. Comments include the commenter’s IP address and browser user‑agent string for spam detection.
  • Accounts: If accounts are enabled, we collect registration details such as username and email address.
  • Submissions and tips: If you send us materials (text, images, audio, video), we collect whatever information you include. Please avoid submitting sensitive personal information unless necessary.

B. Information collected automatically

  • Device and browser data: When you access the Services, we automatically collect data such as IP address, device type, operating system, browser type, language and time zone.
  • Usage data: We collect information about pages you view, time spent, links clicked, referring URLs and search queries on our site.
  • Cookies and identifiers: We use “cookies” and similar technologies (pixels, local storage, SDKs) to recognize your browser, remember preferences and improve the user experience. Cookies are small text files stored on your device that allow the site to track usage behaviour and facilitate access.
  • Approximate location: We may derive approximate location (e.g., country or city) from IP address for analytics and localisation.

C. Information from third parties

We may receive information from:

  • Analytics providers (e.g., Google Analytics) for aggregated audience insights.
  • Advertising partners (e.g., Google Ads or DoubleClick) to deliver ads and measure performance; Radio‑Canada notes that ad partners may track the number of times you view an ad but not your name or address.
  • Social media platforms if you interact with our official pages or share our content.
  • Service providers such as hosting, security and email‑delivery vendors.

  8. Protect rights and security: Detect, prevent and respond to fraud, abuse or security incidents.
  9. Comply with law: Meet legal obligations, respond to lawful requests and enforce our terms.

If we display ads, we work with advertising partners (e.g., Google Ads) to deliver ads and measure performance. Partners may use cookies or device identifiers to show ads, measure impressions and prevent fraud. We do not knowingly “sell” personal information for monetary value; however, some laws (e.g., California’s CCPA/CPRA) define “sale” or “sharing” broadly. Where required, we provide opt‑out mechanisms, including a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link for California residents.

8. Social Media, Embedded Content and Third‑Party Links

Our articles may include embedded content (e.g., videos, social posts) and links to third‑party sites. These third parties may collect data about you when you interact with them. WE notes that third‑party advertising partners may place or recognize cookies; we encourage you to review any third‑party privacy policies before interacting with their content. We are not responsible for the content or practices of external websites.

9. How We Share Information

By using the Services, you understand that your information may be transferred to jurisdictions with different data‑protection laws.

11. Data Retention

We retain information only as long as necessary for the purposes described here, subject to our obligations under applicable laws and journalistic retention needs. Maghreb Minutes Media Group states that it uses aggregated data to improve design and navigation; similarly, we keep analytics data for a limited period (e.g., 14 months) and then delete or anonymize it. News archives, comments and submissions may be retained longer to preserve historical record, protect against legal claims and enforce community standards.

12. Your Rights and Choices

Your privacy rights vary by jurisdiction. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  1. Access the personal information we hold about you.
  2. Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  3. Delete personal information, subject to exceptions (e.g., journalistic archives, legal obligations).
  4. Object to or restrict certain processing (e.g., targeted advertising).
  5. Withdraw consent for processing based on consent.
  6. Receive a copy of your data in a portable format.
  7. Opt out of sale or sharing of personal information (California residents).

United States (California and other state laws)

California’s CCPA/CPRA provides rights to know what personal information is collected, correct inaccurate information, delete information, opt out of sale or sharing and limit the use of sensitive personal information. CalOPPA requires commercial websites to post a clear privacy policy and disclose how cookies are used. We honour valid opt‑out requests and provide a “Do Not Sell or Share” link when required. We currently do not respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals.

Canada (PIPEDA)

PIPEDA applies to private-sector organizations across Canada that collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of commercial activities. PIPEDA defines personal information broadly and requires organizations to follow ten fair information principles, including accountability, consent, limiting collection and disclosure, accuracy, safeguards, openness, individual access and challenging compliance. We strive to meet these principles and will respond to requests for access or correction.

European Union and United Kingdom (GDPR/UK GDPR)

The GDPR and UK GDPR apply to organizations that target or collect data from EU/UK residents. They provide rights to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and data portability, and impose high penalties for non‑compliance. We process data of EU/UK users only for legitimate purposes, and we provide contact details for privacy inquiries. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Australia

If Australia’s Privacy Act 1988 applies, you may request access to or correction of personal information we hold. The Act and the Australian Privacy Principles govern collection, use, disclosure and storage of personal information. Although we do not have a physical presence in Australia, we strive to provide transparency and safeguards consistent with these standards.

India (Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023)

India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP Act) came into effect on 28 September 2025 and applies to organisations processing the personal data of Indian citizens. The DPDP Act provides rights to access, correct and withdraw consent, and imposes penalties of up to ₹250 crores for non‑compliance. We process data of Indian users in accordance with lawful bases (consent, legitimate interests, etc.) and respect rights provided under the DPDP Act.

Pakistan

Pakistan does not yet have a comprehensive data protection law; a draft Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 has been proposed. Until such legislation is enacted, we apply international best practices for visitors from Pakistan, including limiting collection, using reasonable safeguards and providing transparency.

13. Security

We implement administrative, technical and organisational measures to protect information from unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration or destruction. CBC emphasises the importance of protecting Internet users’ privacy—we take similar steps, including access controls, encryption in transit and regular security reviews. No method is completely secure; if we become aware of a data breach that poses a risk, we will notify affected individuals and authorities as required by law.

14. Children’s Privacy

Our Services are not directed at children under 13 (or 16 in some jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children without appropriate parental consent. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us to request deletion.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy to reflect changes in our practices, technologies or legal requirements. We will post the updated Policy with a new “Last updated” date. If changes are material, we will provide additional notice in accordance with law.
